Captioned performance of Confessions
11 September 2009

The Lyceum is proud to be adding to our existing range of accessible shows and facilities with the introduction of captioned performances.

The first captioned Lyceum show will be the matinee performance of Confessions of a Justified Sinner on Saturday 7 November at 2.30pm.

An example of how captioning works - a screen beside the stage displays the dialogue being spoken by some of the characters in a play.

Captioning works in a similar way to subtitles on TV (or indeed surtitles at opera or at foreign language productions). The words spoken onstage (plus any sound effects) are displayed, by a live captioner, on monitors as text, allowing people who have lost all or part of their hearing to more fully enjoy the dialogue on stage.

Captioning differs from our existing BSL Interpreted performances, as it allows anyone with a hearing difficulty to more fully participate in the theatre experience.

This will be the Lyceum's first captioned production, but it will not be the last - we hope to announce details of further captioned shows soon so watch this space.
